The strategy of scatter gun BS relies on the value of its immediate impact and the fact that fewer bother to read or even notice the retraction or refutation. In Aus it was that Shorten was unjustly stealing pensioners entitlements to a tax refund (on tax they actually hadnt paid), in the UK it was smears on NHS staff who blew the whistle on hospital short comings. I remember years ago in these columns someone referred to Jim Anderton as "that awful Jim Anderton." (Actually a position I had a little sympathy with given his need to be 'in charge' of everything.) I wonder if they'd now be referring to "that awful Michelle Boag"? Probably not. After all, she did it in a good cause right? :)Guerilla Surgeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03427876447124021423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3753486518085091399.post-87071087175541425722020-07-10T07:32:52.819+12:002020-07-10T07:32:52.819+12:00The main stream media are defensively resistant to...The main stream media are defensively resistant to any negative critique of their performance this year. They resist any suggestion of bias or professional turpitude and attempt to justify their approach by stating that “they are holding the government to account”. This is a journalistic conceit used to cover the fact that their “stories” are really opinion and not reportage. I notice that the Spinoff does link to a critical evaluation of NZ journalism on Al Jazeera but immediately offers a refutation of this critique. Your analysis of journalistic standards in relation to the recent Boag-Walker fiasco is quite correct Chris, as is your resigned acceptance of the media’s unwillingness to confront their issues and reform themselves.Borisnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3753486518085091399.post-36943624739031093312020-07-09T19:00:42.987+12:002020-07-09T19:00:42.987+12:00A long time National supporter said to me yesterda...A long time National supporter said to me yesterday in response to this latest scandal, a la Dirty Politics, "that's it, I'm not voting National this election". What you may exclaim, thats just one person! Well no start listening and see the pro Labour groundswell out on the street. I would say that irrespective of the known sycophants in the media doing their utmost to deflect and move on, National are going to take a hiding come September 19. Jacinda should get a decent mandate and then we can all start to see some real progress. I also doubt that Michelle Boag was the original source of the leaked documents. I may be wrong about that, but will not be surprised at all if it is proven via Michael Heron QC's enquiry that a Nat sympathiser passed the information on to her. I heard, earlier in the week, that in her role at the Trust she has stood down from, there would have been no reason for her to have the list of positive Covid cases as part of her work for them. This just seems like very typical "Dirty Politics" from the Nats as per boringly usual and Michelle up to her usual tricks. The good thing though, is that the voting public seem to be far more aware of how the National Party operate than they have been in previous election years.Flaneusehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15484679723989740203noreply@blogger.com
