As a consequence I have no cousins, and only ever knew one grand-auntie. This is despite me being of a sixth generation in this country.<br /><br />My father was just too young to serve, but both my mum and dad were very, very unimpressed by the whole thing. "We've had quite enough of that thank you" would sum up their attitude.<br /><br />And while I'm always willing to be respectful of the men and what they went through, and how those who returned suffered mostly in silence the rest of their lives; I have inherited my parents deep suspicion of anything that smacks of the glorification of war.<br /><br />Those wars were an unmitigated catastrophe in every sense of the word. And they were in fact entirely avoidable, but for the dark scheming, criminal hubris and sneering arrogance of the power elites of the day. <br /><br />Thank you Chris for reminding us once again that underneath all ceremonies and soothing rituals, the men themselves would for the large part have preferred us to take the day off, make love to our women, play with the kids, tidy the garden with an old dog supervising... or take the whole lot for a stroll in the park.RedLogixnoreply@blogger.com
