Image Of The Day - No. 1

Jacinda Ardern as Ziggy Stardust promises New Zealanders ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!

The quotation belongs to Eduard Bernstein (1850-1932) the despised Second International reformist, who spurned the doctrine of violent revolution in favour of an evolutionary, peaceful and parliamentary road to socialism.

If any readers know the identity of the artist, please let the rest of us in on the secret. Such a brilliant piece of agit-prop deserves to be properly credited.

This posting is exclusive to Bowalley Road.

I'm assuming this meme is - at least, partly - created by John Moore (a Bernstein fan). John has also tweeted the following, to go along with it: "Is the Labour-led government a government of real change? Or is the Labour-led government all about style over substance? Whatever is the case, expectations are at an all time high."

I like this Chris. Movement might mean action but also means a concerted group where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Individualism may be heroic, but the thought comes to me from experience that a group of wholehearted citizens trying to start a movement, working together fairly, resisting the urge to be bombastic and find fault, agreeing on a base and then having new projects as pilots is so encouraging that I feel that many movements like this would save society from its excesses. That would be an heroic movement.

As you've pointed out Chris and we've witnessed re poverty, there will be little more movement from here on in. Unless, of course, JACINDA...(sad to rely on some unknowable monarch's headspace again. Why do the people have to cross their fingers 90 % of the time?).

Many thanks Bryce for the information necessary for democracy. Only suggestion, being an armchaired pleasure-lover, a sparky short version that people can't avoid, indeed desire. As per the US late night shows.

Something to ponder from the lyrics of Ziggy Stardust....

Ziggy played for time, jiving us that we were voodoo
The kid was just crass, he was the nazz
With God given ass
He took it all too far but boy could he play guitar

Making love with his ego Ziggy sucked up into his mind
Like a leper messiah

Ziggy was all front, looked and sounded good but failed to deliver...The band had to be split up.

Jacinda Adern-Trudeau.

Nothing will change until politicians stop talking like Hillary. The Chinese like Trump as a straight talker (for example).
The other day I watched Plastic "Jack" Tame interview the head of tourism NZ who jumped with joy as to how tourism was booming: "they spend $60b in the economy". Not a word about an inconvenient truth: real wages in the sector are falling. The best response the liberal media will come up with is stronger unions, but union power is based on exclusivitey whereas Jacinda Adern-Trudeau's policy is "Imagine - The Beatles". Liberal society eventually disappears up it's own backside.
RNZ's biases would not prosper without Labour's blessing. E.g.
Julie Zhu
"I feel that sort of positioning of Pakeha and everyone else. I would think of the ideal as Maori and everyone else because Maori are kind of the only unique aspect of NZ that really needs to be upheld if we are to move forward and I think there just needs to be solidarity

Paul Spoonley who is a champion of Pakeha not being an ethnic group agreed (of course). Kau Tod Nial a ho and up and away (or up your nose with a rubber hose).
Outspoken. Auckland Issues RNZ.

I continue to have an open mind over this government's prospects.

But I note the following:

John Key (aided by the media) turned his household into a kind of Royal Family.

Jacinda has gone several steps further and turned her household into a kind of Holy Family.

In terms of political iconography, it's an unprecedented achievement and might change our concept of what's electorally possible.

Victor, nice observations about Keys "royalty" and Jacindas' "divinity". There are things afoot that need a Veblen style commentary.

Perhaps the most telling aspect of Jacinda is that she not only learned at the knee of Aunty Helen but also 'worked' for a time in Tony Blair's office.

Blair was famous for his 'Cool Britannia' stuff with any number of luvvies and 'celebrities' visiting 10 Downing St.

It seems the strategy of association with popularity and at the same time not actually doing anything is Jacinda's way forward; Cool Zealandia?

If she hasn't done anything substantive in the first 12 months in office, she's fodder for the opposition who will savage her as useless.

I suspect this will be the case.
